I left the gates wide open today, hoping to snare errant couriers. The first lobbed in at about 11 am, carrying the DSL modem package so I could connect to a service provided a week ago.
While still reading the manual, the second courier drove up with the WiFi router/switch package. So I ignored the manual and wired the router into my network, then plugged the DSL modem into its WAN port.
Trying to connect, I found that the router did not like talking to the DSL modem. I ripped the combination apart and connected only the modem, after installing the bespoke software that came with it.
Had the setup completed with only a minor hitch: the router talking to the modem had reset or somehow affected the modem's password. First call for help - learned how to reset the modem and re-enter the password...
Powered everything down and tried to go through the firewall router once more - no dice. Of course the service provider will give no support for anything but a straight-through connection. You have a different setup, you're on your own...
Some seven hours later, I've thrown the towel for the day and went back to the straight-thru setup.
At least I can vent my spleen at blogger.com...
Tomorrow we'll be welcoming the Mamott family to Tuncurry. We'll besiege the new home they've rented until the removalists have finished. Giulia et al are due to lob in hours later with the two kids. This should be fun. Raphy's birthday cake, at least, will be a welcome surprise...
Cheers guys!
