I was about to continue reading Machado de Assis' Dom Casmurro yesterday evening when my 100-y-o Nexus 7 tablet stopped working. That was at 6:48 p.m., I noticed, and the Almightly G. had just 'updated' my Nexus 7...
Trouble is - whether from lack of imagination or reliable records - Google had blithely created a Nexus 7 rpt 7 mobile - and downloaded all sorts of updates for that...
(... in case you wonder: ellipses are my trademark...)
Three hours later, the tablet had still not resumed working, but the photo of my lovely silkie Portia still figured brightly as the wallpaper... And the tablet had become noticeably hot.
This is it, I thought, and went online to buy a cheap ($A176) Samsung A4 7-inch tablet which looked o.k. And it had a 2-year warranty...
When we went to bed, the old Nexus 7 was astonishingly hot, so I wrapped it in a cotton bag and hung it up outside to cool off.
At around 2 a.m. I heard a loud bang, and thought, ah well, batteries have been known to explode. I dashed outside and the tablet was dark. And cool...
Today I took out the battery and smashed the tablet to pieces that will - according to the inscrutable environmentally sound (?) policies of our local council - go into landfill, with any other electronic rubbish.
It is comforting to know that we won't be around when the toxic ingredients leach out! Nor perhaps many others...
