Arms as development aid?

We hear a lot these days about German arms exports - up 75 per cent in one year! - and it's interesting to see where they go: it appears that a lot of the receiving countries are those developing countries that are the worst hot spots of international tension, Brazil, the Middle East, Africa...

We saw a lengthy interview on German TV the other day with the Social Democrat Defence Minister, who I shall henceforth call Kramp-Panzerbauer, and very proud she was indeed about the German prowess in producing lethal weaponry, tanks in particular.

It's all in the interests of keeping Germans employed, she enthused. Well, in that case they must accept responsibility for creating new torrents of refugees, and must accept them into the Bundesrepublik nilly-willy...

It is not a country I would flee to, but one where the word Rechtsstaat (state of law) has been taken to the extreme: even the humble police is equipped with the most modern arsenal of lethal weaponry, and they don't hesitate to bring it out in the interests of defending Germans against 'terrorism' or people suspected thereof.

A TV movie we saw on the ZDF chain yesterday showed it all in frightening detail - but there's one thing the film missed to spell out. The protagonist was a private detective with armed forces training who seemingly had not learned one simple thing: if you are on the run, with a leftist peace blogger in tow, NEITHER of them should have used their mobiles at all! It was fun to observe how both the BND (federal intelligence service) and the police were able to see their every move - and pin-point them for 'taking care of the problem' (BND) or instant nabbing (police) LOL

But perhaps making it that obvious for the spectator was the purpose of the show, in the middle of 'cyber security week'...
